History

Baby Shakes were founded 2004 in New York City by Mary Blount (born November 1982, from Seattle), Judy Hsu (born November 1981, from Atlanta) and Claudia Gonzalez (born January 1984, from New York). Their first concert happened in February 2005. They have toured the US, Europe (September 2007) and Japan (February 2009). A second tour in Europe is taking place in November and December 2009.

The drums are played by certain colleagues, the main drummer is Dave Rahn from Atlanta (he drums actually for Gentleman Jesse and Carbonas). Rahn played the drums on all recordings. During the tour in Japan in February 2009 the drums were played by Travis Ramin (Nikki Corvette, Fevers); on the current European 2009 tour the drumming is provided by the Japanese New Yorker Shingo Nishimaru.

Reception

Mark Deming of Allmusic in his review of The First One referred to the group as "three good-looking gals who can write great pop tunes with a dash of punk rock energy and girl group harmonies to boot" he goes on to call their songs "as refreshing as a tall glass of lemonade on a hot day". Deming does lament that "the production by Dave Rahn...could use a bit more body" but goes on to conclude "the music's good enough that you can play the album two or three times in a row without it wearing out its welcome".[1] J. Edward Keyes of Rolling Stone refers to the group as "[t]he new sound of old punk".[2]
